The Pre-Purchase Inspection: What It Covers and Why It Cannot Be Skipped

Every year, buyers skip or rush a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) to close a deal faster — and every year, some of them discover the real cost of that shortcut after delivery, when there is no leverage left to renegotiate.

What a proper PPI actually covers

A comprehensive pre-purchase inspection is not a walk-around. It typically includes:

  • Airframe and engine logbook review — confirming maintenance history matches the aircraft’s actual configuration and hours
  • Full avionics functional check — every system powered up and tested, not just visually inspected
  • Structural inspection — corrosion, prior damage history, and repair documentation
  • Interior condition assessment — cabin systems, upholstery wear, and any undisclosed modifications
  • Airworthiness Directive (AD) compliance — confirming every applicable AD has been complied with, and how

Why sellers rarely volunteer bad news

A seller’s broker has no financial incentive to encourage a rigorous PPI — a clean, fast closing is what pays their commission. This is exactly the kind of situation where buyer-side representation matters: an advisor with no seller relationship has no reason to smooth over inspection findings.

Who should perform it

The PPI should be conducted by an independent MRO facility of the buyer’s choosing — never one suggested by the seller or their broker. Findings should be documented in writing before any final offer is confirmed.

What happens when findings surface

Most PPIs surface at least minor discrepancies. The question is what happens next: a good-faith seller will either remedy the issue, adjust price, or allow withdrawal without penalty. If a seller resists all three, that itself is useful information.

We coordinate PPIs with independent MROs for every acquisition we advise on, and review findings with the buyer before any commitment is finalized — never after.
